Fictional Short story Essay

In the story “ Where are you going, Where have you been?” By Joyce Carol Oates the author interprets the life of a young American teenage girl who is living in a world that isn’t treating her the way she deserves it. Oates lets you visualize a young girl being nieve and manipulated. The author relates Connies life to many girls in the world who are innocently put in bad situations. The character Connie represents a girl being controlled in a bad position with very few choices to be made. The message to the story is to never trust anyone.
Connie is a character that is dynamic. She is a young, sweet, pretty girl who comes off very confident but truely isnt. She is insecure and nieve. Her mother has a big influence on her self image. She makes her feel that she isnt good enough and her sister is better. Connie likes to hang out with her girl friends and is a bit boy crazy. Her family life at home isnt the sweetest; she lives with her parents and her sister June. Connies mother constantly puts her down comparing her to her sister. “Why dont you keep your room clean like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed what the hell stinks? Hair spray? You dont see your sister using that junk.” I believe that Connies mother says these things to make it as if her daughter June has a more organized, structured healthy life. June has her mind set on better things. She wants the best for her daughter but dosnt go about it in the right way. They think she is conceited and only cares about is the way she looks. ” Stop gawking at yourself, who are you?”…” Her mothers had been pretty once too, if you look at those old snapshots in the album, but now her looks were gone and that was why she was always after Connie.”(p.595) My first thought is that her mother and sister are both envious of her. We all unconciously have the feeling and need of wanting to belong, especially by ones we love. Connies family dosnt accept her for who she.
