The late Wes Moore, aka “The Colonel,” led the Driller marching band at Bakersfield High School from 1946 to 1979, positively influencing countless youth. As Kern County collectively picks up the book “The Other Wes Moore” as the 11th annual One Book, One Bakersfield, One Kern community read this fall, many who knew him will recall Bakersfield’s own Wes Moore. The book, about two Wes Moores growing up in similar neighborhoods, is about how life choices and mentoring can make a difference in a young person’s future.
As part of this community read, the One Book committee is collecting memories of our own Wes Moore to publish in The Bakersfield Californian and on the One Book, One Bakersfield, One Kern website. Please submit your stories in 300 words or less to Jennifer Burger at jburger1@csub.edu. To be considered for the newspaper, please submit them by Wednesday, Aug. 31. There is no deadline for website. For more information, please call Jennifer Burger at 661-654-2138.
